Lya Elcagu is a successful oriental dancer from Switzerland, and has been performing since 2003. She has performed for various audiences in several countries, and has organized a large number of her own full-length appearances – many to live music.
For a long time, Lya has been the main dancer in the famous Lebanese restaurant "Le Cèdre" in Zurich. There, and at its sister restaurant at Bellevue (Zurich), Lya built up, and coor-dinated, a group of dancers. Furthermore, Lya was part of the show ensemble of Khaled Seif's and another of Amira's. In Julie's ensemble she had the opportunity to further internalize oriental fusions. Moreover, she worked in a quartet, together with Nicole McLaren, Mirimah and Viviane Gerhard, and per- formed at several international events in a duet with Nicole McLaren.
She is an expert at captivating her audience with her stage presence. She engages the audience through her enthusiasm and charm. Her charm derives from an elegant and sensuous dancing style, which she masterfully highlights through baladi (belly dance style). In her experiences with dance, she has dis- played great interest in a very specific accessory, the shamadan (candle holder). The grace of this dance, combined with the necessary body control, and the strong presence of such a performance, are the key features which have drawn Lya to this accessory.
Lya discovered a new passion during a several month long sabbatical in Argentina -- Tango. The longing and sensuality of this dance, and its enourmous power, lead her to fall in love with it. The necessary body control, combined with the distinctive contact to the dance partner, made her dis-cover new techniques for the oriental dance. In her recent performances she masterly merges both styles, resulting in her unique, unmistakable dance.
Lya deepened her knowledge about the history, the technique, and the rhythms of this dance over the course of two years. She spent these two years studying under Khaled Seif to become an oriental dance instructor. She successfully finished her study with Khaled in 2010. Likewise, she was taught by numerous other renowned teachers from Switzerland and abroad. She is constantly looking for new challenges and is continuously broadening her knowledge base in dance theory and technique. Because of this dedication to perfecting her craft, she has attended projects by the internationally acclaimed masterinstructor Momo Kadous in 2011, and in 2012, she took part in an intensive project by Mayyada, for professional dancers. In this same year she participated in a dance sabbatical with Amir Thaleb, and Saida, to complete her understanding of technique and body control.
After years of education and experience performing her craft for audiences internationally, she has continued to blossom her own techniques and styles into a perfor-mance which dance enthusiasts, and entertainment seekers don’t want to miss.
Next to her performances, she has taught oriental dance since 2003. She has been giving courses in The Center for Oriental Dance (ZeoT), and gets booked regularly for workshops. Lya is dedicated to teaching her students the intricacies of her dance style. Not only is she committed to teaching them its profound technique, but, also, to helping the students develop a deeper feeling for her unique dance style.
